I have a Cable/DSL Router from Linksys. This handy little box has a
built-in Firewall and DHCP. No need for any software on my system.
Nothing gets through to my system, period. I can access any site I want
from my system and you can even make an individual system visible to the
web should you decide to have a web server. It handles up to 255
systems. It is DHCP, so when you boot your system, it grabs an IP from
the router and it takes care of the rest. You can use it on cable or
DSL. They router has a BIOS so they update that, once in a great while.
But if you want something solid that will protect you then I would
highly recommend this little router. They are ~$50, cheap for such great
protection. (there are others on the market as well)
This is not a virus checker, you still need that, but it eliminates the
overhead of installing, managing and updating software firewalls.

By the way, I have DSL and ZA filters out lots of unwanted traffic. To
minimize disk I-O, I have logging set to off.

Subject: ZoneAlarm Pro W2K problems resolved with new version 4.0
I previously posted about serious problems some users of W2K SP3,
including
me, were having with the last few versions of ZA 3.X.
The newly released 4.0 version resolves these problems and seems
otherwise
clean. The problems were actually resolved during beta testing.
I like ZA and think it's a good product; I've been using it for years.
Years ago a patch or two from Microsoft broke ZA, but that hasn't
happened
for a long time. However, it pays to be careful with new releases of ZA
or
anything, and see how other users fare before jumping in. I am
reasonably
confident in the new release, at least on my system, because of my
participation in the beta. User forums are at http://forums.zonelabs.com
