Full backup and verify of 1.5 gig on logical partitions C+D+E takes approx. 1:40
without compression using the Seagate CT8000 EIDE drive. IMO a tape backup
without full verify is worthless because the verify proves that the tape drive
can read what it has written - one of the first indications of tape drive
failure is an inability to read what it has written. IMO, the ideal backup uses
a combination of tape and disk (assuming enough disk space is available on a
spare hard drive): full weekly backup/verify to tape which clears all archive
bits and nightly differential backup to disk where each daily backup is written
to alternating directories e.g. DBack01 on Mon, DBack02 on Tue, DBack01 on Wed.
Unlike incremental backups, differential backups do not clear the archive bit so
they backup all files which have changed since the full backup cleared the
archive bit. A badly corrupted disk can be restored by first restoring the full
backup and then restoring the latest differential backup. Alternatively, use of
incremental backups requires restoring the full backup and then restoring each
of the incremental backups in proper order. Where enough space is not available
for nightly differential backups to an alternate disk, I would remove the full
backup tape and then do nightly differential backups to a fresh tape for the
week.
