Based upon 30+ years experience as a software developer and systems
consultant, I submit that the dollars thrown at software development have
far less bearing upon the quantity and quality of code produced than the
qualtiy of the system design effort, quality of project management, and the
discipline in quality assurance. In any but the very best managed projects,
a doubling of programming resources will result in very significantly
decreased productivity per hour of programming - maybe 25% overall increase
in output for 100% increase in money. Based on bug content and extended
development periods for incremental enhancements, I would surmise that
Omega's project management capabilities are inadequate. From all
appearances, the product was redesigned/rewritten for 3.5 and is again
being
redesigned/rewritten for 5.0. Believe me, a 16-32 bit conversion should not
require years of effort and a redesign/rewrite of any system which was
properly designed. Major rewrites further extend schedules because the
process of finding and exterminating bugs must begin from scratch. To
summarize, without adequate skills to manage product development, the
development budget is no indication of probable results.

I too have over 30 as a systems consultant and developer. I fully concur
with your statements.

>From what little I know of Omega's coding and project management, I feel
that they are sadly lacking in standards and organizational skills.

With the choice of C++ as a development language, it make analysis, design,
and standards even more important.

I once volunteered to work with them AT NO CHARGE, just to try to get a
better product. I was refused. Seems like they were concerned that I
would step on toes and appropriate trade secrets. I have worked with
banks, government, law enforcement and military agencies on projects much
larger and more secret than TradeStation.

Leadership comes from the top and is reflected by the rest of the
organization. So draw your own conclusions.
