I too have had a nightmare installing Win98. I lost my entire hard drive partitions
and everything stored on the hard drive in the process. But I will say that that was
my fault, not Win98. I putts with computers too much to know that it is easy to
blame some one or something over a computer problem, when 9 times out of 10, it is
an error or oversight on my part.
After a few days of use I think Win98 is what was promised in Win95. Better plug -n-
play, a bit easier dealing with system failures or hardware conflicts. It gives you
some room to be able to make adjustments, It has automated some of the system
maintenance that had previously been done manually.
Anyway you can read the reviews from some one else.
As an upgrade with or with out all the hassles it is worth it for me in particular
the multi-monitors.
The list of chips that need to be on the PCI VGA card are as follows:
The multiple-monitor-support feature of Windows 98 only supports the following
selected PCI and AGP cards:
ATI Mach64 GX (Supports Direct Draw)
Trident 9685/9680/9682/9385/9382/9385-1 PCI
S3 764V+ (765), Trio 64V2
S3 ViRGE (Supports Direct Draw and Direct 3D)
S3 Aurora (S3M65)
Cirrus 5436,7548,5446
ATI Rage 1 and 2 (VT and greater)
ATI 3D Rage Pro
However the manual states PCI only.
