I know I really shouldn't get involved in this...:
All the callers for "free speech" on RT don't seem to remember that they are
on a private, MODERATED list. This is not your local street corner, nor is
Usenet. The forum is paid for and supported by Eddie Kwong and his company
and certain rules have been published by Eddie & John related to
communication on this forum. So, as in any general gathering, there are
certain rules of decorum that have evolved over the life of this list. We
all need to follow to these rules to create and maintain an environment
which is comfortable for the majority of the membership.
IMO, I was happy for Gary's success but his posts were becoming somewhat
boorish, full of bragging and "if you don't see what I see, then you must be
stupid" crap. Sure I can and did use the delete key (and was considering
setting up a filter). But why should I have to do that? Pretend Gary was
in a face-to-face discussion with you and a few others. Would you stick
around and listen to him day after day? I think not.
A sad truism of internet life is that there are ALWAYS a few someone's out
there who will defend anything, no matter how illogical. But in this case,
Gary's expulsion is not a case of/for free speech since again, this is a
MODERATED forum. If you want free speech and flame wars, then there are a
number of other forums and usenet newsgroups for you to select from.
I think John took the right action. Now let's stop making a molehill into
mountain!
