The people who manage our power are getting better at letting the public
know what areas may be affected in advance. When it's potentially your turn,
you become cautious as to what trades you place that day. My UPS's will run
my computers, and satellite receiver for 13 minutes (already tested) which
gives me plenty of time to go out and start my diesel generator which runs
just about everything. Phone lines continue to function and my ISP also has
a backup generator although I don't rely on the net for my trading.
Since California is earthquake country, the potential of no power has always
existed. Where I live we are not supported by city services with exception
to phone and power. Without power I have no water (wells) and we are always
one of last areas to get power when the lines are down. So we learned a long
time ago how to adapt, overcome and life still goes on. Inconvenience yes,
crisis no. I mean we're only talking a couple of hours of no power.
