I started a list like this several years ago, with very similar goals and
ideas. It was called the "Advanced Trading Ideas" or ATIlist (some of you
probably remember it :-). It was great for a short while, with some good
discussions. One problem was that folks in this business are not very
inclined to discuss the reeeeeally good stuff. After a while, what people
would discuss was discussed, and the traffic died out to a trickle.

The list was given two other 'homes' after my ISP stopped supporting
lists, but it never recovered. It is/was under Mark Brown's lists in its
last incarnation :-). If/when he restores his lists, it might still be
there.

Perhaps there are enough 'new' ideas to make this worthwhile again -
manybe enough time has passed, and enough new interested people. I'd be
most interested in how to make this an on-going list - one that does not
'peter out' again. Any ideas?

Regarding egroups, I manage several groups there and have some serious
reservations about them. (1) I have written to them repeatedly about some
details of their privacy statement, and they refuse to answer the
questions - just beat around the bush. (2) I have evidence that they do
not protect the addresses of members. I have spam traced to one of their
lists. A complaint to abuse @ egroups has not been acknowledged. (3) A
friend has received commercial spam relating to a medical topic that was
discussed on an egroups list. This info could only have been generated by
reading the *contents* of the message.

All the money nowadays is in compiling dossiers on people and selling
them. Egroups mail is one of the largest goldmines of personal
information on the net. There's no such thing as a free lunch...

I'd strongly suggest running the list at a small ISP with no reason to
snoop. I'm changing ISP's and may be able to do this (don't know yet -
never looked at list support). Anyone else can do?
