I am in the midst of figuring out the mechanics of running a 2nd dial
connection on a Win 2000 computer in addition to a DSL connection (via
Linksys DSL Cable Router) so as to have a fallback system for Esignal.
Thought I would share my experiences for whoever is interested.
1. Esignal will automatically look for any available connection if the one
it is using is lost.
2. There is a great little device called Netoscope basta.com that will play
sounds, send email, etc. to alert you if it cannot ping whatever web site
you choose. 30 days free, then about $30 I believe.
3. There is also a product called Soft Router from Vicomsoft.com which does
this on a gateway/firewall pc. Manages multiple connections and lets you
allocate which is used first. Costs about $130. I tried it, but could not
get it to connect to my Earthlink PPPoE DSL.
4. In general, PPPoE is a total pain. I would recommend that anyone
comparing DSL/cable deals ask about this and shy away from PPPoE.
Basically, it requires logging on and some other versions do not.
5. Lets say that I run Outlook Express and have it check for messages every
1 minute only using a dial-up connection. If the dialup goes down, it will
redial it. So this keeps the dial-up running.
6. The problem I have run into is that Esignal and other programs as well
seem to prioritize the dialup connection -- if both are available. My
preference would of course be to have the DSL used first if available. I
wonder if anyone knows how to address this? Seems simple enough that there
would be some internet utility to do this.
If anyone has any ideas to share on this topic, I would love to hear them.
Regards,
Chris
