I think you would be safer if you the application developer and the data
service provider are not one and the same entity and the data don't
go thru the net. Else, a lot more than just your name can potentially be 
sent over. 

If you get an chart & testing application and it frequently/constantly 
maintains contact with the developer because of data or upgrading
(like with antivirus signatures for eg) as opposed to ftping a standalone 
upgrade exe, which gives you some control, the guy can take a lot of stuff
from you. I don't see how you can't firewall it properly.
