Let's make your analogy a little more accurate, Doug: let's say you
bought a Beta VCR. And you collected hundreds of movie$$, and made a
bunch of priceless videos of your kids. All on Beta tapes.
Now imagine Sony has a bunch of problems with these Beta sets,
they're full of bugs and cause all kinds of problems, Sony ignores
the customer pleas to fix them, yadda yadda yadda. And gee, it turns
out your unit is going to go belly-up and stop working in 8 months,
and Sony will be happy to sell you a new one for $1000 or so, but
it's so bad you can't even use it. Or at least you can't without
tremendous pain.
And imagine it's not just a simple matter to hook up your Beta VCR to
a VHS deck to COPY all of your tapes to a new format.
You're stuck, Doug. You chose a product from the industry leader,
but it turned out to be a poorly-supported and badly-performing unit.
And you've made a huge commitment in $$ and in "data" on those tapes.
Now is it so easy to just chuck it and go find another option?
If moving was a simple matter, I think a lot of people WOULD have
already. But for various reasons they're stuck. They'd be satisfied
to keep plugging along with TS4, but golly, that nasty ol' Y2K patch
just never seems to appear... Meanwhile they may have hundreds or
thousands of hours invested in indicators, systems, and just plain
old "learning time" that won't translate very well to another
platform. They don't want to leave but it seems like Omega is
yanking the rug out from under them, unless they swallow the bitter
pill of a new product that, from most reports, is not safe to use.
THAT'S why they're wailing and commiserating.
