Why jump from 800x600 to 1280 ?  Why not use 1024x768 ?  This is a very
nice size.
1280 is a strain for most monitors, unless very expensive.

You might try a high-quality video cable, the type with a tiny coax
cable for each signal line.  These are only about $25.
