Thanks to all that replied with their personal experience!
Ed I'm so sorry that I made you relive your Symantec frustrations and
blood pressure skyrocket!
Marek thanks for your offer of assistance to join Linuxdom!
I need to stick with Windows however, due to my companies software
requirements.
William I have checked around and the free version of Avast! appears
to be highly rated. I think that will be my choice for
AntiVirus....thanks for the recommendation!
As far as firewalls go, I am still undecided (I am in "free" mode now
after 8+ years paying Norton)....the free Zone Alarm? or Sygate free
personal firewall. Others I should consider?
I do have cable and a wireless router, I am aware that the router is
a hardware firewall. However, I also run a laptop and sometimes use
dialup, so a software firewall is always handy.

obtainable at www.grisoft.com. When I got infected with the Sven
virus a few months ago, AVG had a fix a full day before Norton and
McAfee had it. It seems to do an excellent job of catching viruses,
and the nice thing, it is free. However, the most recent issue of PC
World found the AVG Pro version (the one you pay for) to be very
inferior to other antivirus programs on the market. Confusing. Anyone
else have any problems with AVG?

automatic daily updates. AVG together with ZoneAlarm firewall are a
good combination, imo.

best choice is at the moment agree about Symantec ....... I had
enough of Symantec / Norton as well. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get ANY
communication going to get help with their stuff. I had a major crash
on one of my machines when I put XP on top of Windows 2000. I just
formatted the drive and therefor I lost my Symantec stuff. Now I
can't get it back because nobody in this damned firm can be reached
to help me with this problem. Since I upgraded their program from
their page. I have no stuff on disk.

Short SYMC!!! Now I use the Zonealarm free firewall and I got a Virus
Scanner from McAfee (borrowed). Also I use free Spybot and Adaware to
get rid of other pests,
