Ah, the perils of self-governance. Still, this country has it pretty
good considering the alternatives. And on balance, things have never
been better. Every generation seems to decry the excesses and evils of
the present while romanticizing and mythologizing the past. Its a
pattern that seems to repeat itself in every family.

I grew up to stories of hopelessness during the 1930's depression,
accompanied by hopes of a return to the idyllic 19th century life before
The Great War (aka WW I). I kept hearing how great life was before
Hoover. Before Wilson. When the only Roosevelt was Teddy. Their present
reality was more painful. They forgot how their parents considered
Indians to be such a threat to their safety that the government paid to
have them killed. "Why do the Indians hate us so much, and try to
interfere with our lives and commerce?" (Does this sound familiar?)

Back in this century, an entire generation was gripped in the Forties by
the fear of imminent invasion by the Japanese, and the very real threat
that the Germans were developing a nuclear bomb to put atop the missiles
they already had hailed into London. We were shocked at the inhumanity
of Nazi death camps and at how close we came ourselves. Later in the
Fifties we practiced finding shelter from nuclear fallout while living
with the daily fear of instant annilhilation. And in the sixties we
watched Huntley and Brinkley report every night on sons and brothers and
friends who got drafted and killed in a war very few wanted.

Everyone lived their lives against the backdrop of those horrors, yet
somehow we still found joy and happiness and peace in our personal
lives. No, the past is not more innocent than now and life was not
easier then. We tend to forget the horror as we get older, and remember
only the good times.

Every generation has its challenges, and we're fortunate to live in a
country and culture that is eager to overcome them.
