That's what's so fascinating about the parallels between the 20s-30s
and 80s-90s. Germany/Japan were already in recession from the mid-
20s while the US was booming. Actually the US embargoed oil and
scrap iron exports to Japan prompting the surprise attack. But
France/Germany's lack of cooperation here is reminiscent of the US
isolationist policy into the late 1930s.
