You're not at all paranoid! I've had lots of stops hit while being right on
direction. I don't generally take a position home which closes near my stop
for just the reasons you mention. However it's also judgement based on
trend, news (event) risk, and the pre-close action. I never take a position
home which is against the primary trend. Today I spent some money today and
considerable effort in putting on a short position which I could carry home
and finally succeeded late in the day. Close was far enough away from stop
to provide breathing room, event risk appears favorable to a short position,
and my trend work points down. This was the kind of setup which makes me
comfortable taking it home, however doesn't guarantee they won't stop me in
the night session. The risk is worth having position for Monday's trading.

I completely agree Earl.....I dont think I have ever knowingly violated a
stop. But no matter how big your stop is.....there will always be times when
the market closes within a few points of that. Let me know if I am being
paranoid...lol

Stops should be used for the purpose of controlling risk and preserving
capital. Although there are many who trade without stops or use them
selectively, I can't imagine any reason for being selective about risk
management. If you can't carry stops wide enough to handle the volatility
of
night sessions, then you shouldn't carry overnight.

I am trading the emini S&P and was wondering how people handled their
stops if they are hit during after hours trading. If my stop is hit based
on
the charts and work I have developed.....should I get out? My gut feeling
is
this is the sneakiest, most manipulated time imaginable. Would appreciate
any thoughts on this, I dont really want to have to watch my positions at
3
am sat....the only thing I want to see at that time is Benny Hill.....or
Miss November.
