[RT] Avoiding virus infection from email attachments

It is not necessary to avoid Microsoft products or use Anti-Virus software
to avoid infection. For most users, MS IE/OE integrate most easily into the
operating environment (not getting into anti-trust issues). AV software does
provide a level of "set it and forget it" security needed by some users,
however the software can cause almost as many problems as it solves. AV
software is not needed by those users willing to educate themselves a bit,
take certain precautions, and avoid opening file types which may contain a
virus.

As I have mentioned here previously, I do not bother with anti-virus but I
have secured my OE 5.5 to the highest levels of security. I have never had a
problem with anything thrown my way in years of using these lists and
processing over 1,500 emails weekly.

A) securing Outlook Express requires two simple steps:

1) Use Internet Explorer >Tools >Internet Options >Security, then click on
the "Restricted Sites" icon. Under "Security Level for this zone" click on
"Custom Level", change every setting to the most restrictive you can find
(generally "Disable"), and click on "Ok" to save it.

2) Use Outlook Express >Tools >Options >Security, under "Security Zones"
select "Restricted Sites Zone" ... this applies the most restrictive
settings you have established in step 1.

B) users who open email attachments which are not of types EML (email), GIF,
and JP(E)G (images) significantly increase chances of infection and should
not do so without using AV software to first scan the attachment. Files of
type EXE, COM, SCR, DOC, and XLS are particularly prone to virus trouble.

C) Keep your Windows Updates current. The easiest way to do this is to
download the Critical Updates Notification applet from the Microsoft Windows
Updates page.
