Yes, security is an issue, I believe. If you're on IRC, you really need to
make sure that your PC has all the most recent critical updates from
Microsoft, as well as a good firewall and virus software. I've heard that
there are viruses that propagate only through IRC.
I remember back in '98 or '99 when I wasn't so security minded, that I was
part of a futures trading chat room on Othernet, I think. We were invaded by
a bunch of traders from Russia who eventually forced us to open up a new
room after disrupting ours. Of great surprise to me then, but not now, is
that they managed to 'nuke' me and others several times (crashed our
machines) and one of them was able to tell me a lot about my internal
network. Taught me a valuable lesson on security!

You might want to give a heads-up on security and privacy issues as
well as what might need to be opened up in firewalls. Many computer
security people don't allow chats at all because of the hazards. I'm
sure you are familiar with the many problems that exist, *especially*
for newbies who may not do things just right [dead meat for the
kiddies].
