Re: [RT] chat room

Wrong. Anyone who reads the RFC on the IRC protocol and is a reasonably
adept programmer can write an app to receive all IRC traffic and filter and
sort it as they wish. You don't have to do a man-in-the-middle packet
interception. Bob, you're not trying to mislead people. You know as well
as anyone that all IRC traffic can easily be intercepted.

I repeat my warning: anyone using IRC should always assume they are not
alone.

Not quite true. Undernet, (for instance), has 34 servers located all
around the world. If a person wanted to "listen in" to the chat from one
channel, they would have to "sniff" the traffic coming over that server and
there would be hundreds of thousands of messages or lines which would be
sent to our 22,000 channels by individuals. The "sniffer" would then have
to find just the lines of traffic that were generated in one individual
channel which would be .. well, it would be time consuming to the
extreme. Now, add to this mix the fact that members would not all be on
the same server but might sign on to any of those 34 servers and you would
have to sniff them all and piece the traffic together for the single chat
channel in order so they would make sense. Add to this that the only
people with core access to the server are the server admins who happen to
work at the mostly ISP's that donate bandwidth and the problem is no longer
a problem, it is simply and purely, impossible. ie: No one can see
channel chat unless they are in the channel and we control who that is.

Last, IF Interpol could get search warrants and court orders in affect for
all the European, U.S. and Canadian server owners to cause them to search
every tiny packet of data flowing over all 34 servers and IF that data
could then be compiled into a cohesive flow of data flowing to/from one
channel segment and if all this was arranged prior to the hour/day they
wanted to see what was being said, it IS possible. But then, so is an end
to income tax in the U.S. and democrats leading the effort to cancel
them. :)))
