i can tell you that new york city (& in particular manhattan, where i
live) is a LOT emptier at the moment and that is partly due to tourism
(both domestic & international) falling off DRAMATICALLY. this is
usually the beginning of the busy tourist season -- new theatre, music
series, & other productions ramp up in the fall.
the trickle down (shrivel-up???) effect of tourism drying up is
non-trivial. one also needs to consider the "velocity" of money.
tourism adds to that velocity; the lack contracts it.
