I found that software firewalls are just too expensive
wrt resources used as well as cumbersome to use.
Hardware firewalls are very effective, cheap and invisible.
One feature that a software firewall can offer that a hardware
one cannot is protection from naughty software that you have
somehow allowed to get into your system that is using your
computer to go back out onto the internet.
