I think that's an excellent question. My guess is that the answer is most 
likely no, it doesn't beat random entries.

And it does not beat buy and hold:

8.5.83 - SPX closed 161.74
12.18.97 - SPX closed 955.30

793.56 points = 198,390$ net at the close with only one transaction instead 
of 168.

(in the process of looking at this I discovered that my SP continuous 
contract is all messed up, so thanks to the discussion for making me 
realize I had something to fix this rainy Sunday afternoon).
