Matt,
Depending on whether the money is in a "tax deferred" account, zero coupon
bonds that would yield around 7% might make sense. A guaranteed double in
roughly 7 years, which is something many people should have considered with
the enormous gains that may have so enormously disappeared. If not in a tax
deferred account then the interest tax issue needs to be considered with
zeros. Some of my money is there when I became worried about valuations
(albeit a little early)as of 1 1/2 years ago and have slept quite well. That
may be too conservative depending on your age and investment time horizon.
As things stand now with the drop in interest rates for Treasury bonds I can
still exit not only with a interest return but a capital gain too I believe.
Keep in mind I started at higher interest rates and that could work in
reverse for you now.
