I've been trading futures electronically for 3+ years now and there is no
way I would trade through a phone broker. My experience with IB several
years ago was low costs, poor support service, and great execution. At the
time they offered no phone backup so I used my primary LFG account for
emergency offset. Since then they offer phone backup for $30 per phone
order, however I have trouble believing that they have full staffing for an
outage. I pay LFG considerably more but the phone desk is always there,
always answers quickly, and is always responsive when I have an internet
outage or order system problem. Electronic end-to-end orders (e.g. Globex
and ACE) are cheap to handle and warrant the low commissions which IB
charges. From my perspective, what IB lacks is the infrastructure and
associated higher commissions ... another few bucks per trade would quite
likely support that infrastructure. Without that infrastructure, there is no
way a broker will get my business ... trading is hard enough work and the
additional risk and worry is not worth saving a few bucks. Not a plug for
LFG's long in the tooth LeoWeb software but the support sure is first rate.
