CHINA ISSUES NEW THREATS AGAINST USA
Any talks between China and Taiwan must have reunification as their premise,
Chinese President Jiang Zemin demanded Monday, just as a Chinese military
newspaper issued harsh and specific threats about the military consequences
if Taipei fails to meet China's timetable.
KNIGHT RIDDER circuits are first with details of the Chinese paper that
"hinted at the use of nuclear weapons, predicting that the United States, if
forced to choose between 20 million Taiwanese and 200 million Americans,
would withdraw from Taiwan's defense."
Clinton administration officials are heading to both capitals to try and
calm things down.
The late developments cancel optimism about peaceful talks proposed by
Taiwan's newly elected leader, Chen Shui-bian.
