I can't think of a better example than Microsoft. The Mac is (or was)
generally acknowledged to have a superior operating system but, in spite
of that, most of us use Windows because we want to be able to exchange
files with our neighbors. Market share is everything in this game. Apple
really blew it when they tried to keep their OS proprietary so they
could milk the profits on hardware. They should have been giving the
dang thing away to capture market share back when the Mac OS worked well
and Windows was a joke. Now Microsoft has economies of scale working for
them. It costs the same to develop a new program whether you sell one
copy or a billion. The actual manufacturing cost for a CD is negligible.
