BL,
AMEX has some new Sector SPDR's that can be shorted intraday (with no need
of an uptick (a usual tricky 'short' drawback)). Some of these have very
little volume. They just started trading last month. AMEX also has the
standard SPDR that reflects the S&P and can be traded long and short. (Also,
they have a product they call the 'Diamond' that reflects the DOW
Industrials) All of the above are marginable.
Rydex, Profunds and Potomac have funds that "act" as if you are shorting the
S&P. You actually go long the fund and it moves inverse the S&P. Profunds
and Potomac are leveraged on the downside, where Rydex is shooting for a -1
Beta. (no leverage) Profunds also has an OTC fund that is inverse and
leveraged. (would have been fun to have that one today) I'm not sure if
Potomac has an inverse OTC fund.
Lastly, I hear that some of the Fidelity Sector funds can be sold short. I
don't know for sure because their 'switching' fees led me to go with Rydex.
The AMEX Sector SPDR's look like a very good product.
Hope this helps.
Good trading all,
Mark

Subject: Short Mutual Funds?
Does anyone know if there exist any mutual funds that can be shorted? I
seem to recall reading this somewhere but forgot the fund name. Of
particular interest would be sector and index funds. Thanks, Brian
