- Japanese stocks plunged in early trading Friday as worries over
the widening impact of Russia's financial and political crises
deepened after New York stocks plunged on Thursday, traders said.
Shortly after
the opening, the benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average was down 609.14
points, or 4.23 percent, at 13,804.65, its lowest level since it
closed at 13,994.60 on March 7, 1986. Widespread selling pushed
every sector. Decliners throttled advancers 776 to 46 with 91 issues
unchanged.

Nikkei September futures tumbled 700 points to 13,740.
A delay in the passage
of key bills aimed at repairing Japan's tormented banking sector
also was an intensifying factor in the Tokyo market's downward
trend.

"There are no factors that will encourage buying," said a
trader at a European brokerage house.
"The market environment has
not changed since yesterday," said Yasuo Ueki, general manager
at Nikko Securities Co. Ltd. "It is in fact worse, as the Dow
dropped last night."
On Thursday, the Nikkei ended down 452.24 points, 3.04
percent, at 14,413.79, its lowest price in six years. Nikkei 225
September futures dropped 410 points to 14,440.
Automakers were expected to set
the tone after Hino Motors Ltd. said it expected to record a
loss in the current fiscal year due to a severe slump in Japan's
truck market, reversing a prior forecast of a slight profit.
The Tokyo Stock
Exchange said on Friday that it had suspended trading of Daihatsu

Toyota Motor Corp. will announce a plan to acquire at least
67 million Daihatsu shares.
Australian stocks also
joined in the global market retreat, pulled lower by concerns over
Russia and the Dow's overnight selling spree, traders said.
<IMG
