I bought a second hand UPS - 6KWh for not too much money on Ebay. It had
been part of an AS400 type installation and had new batteries.
It has been extremely good and runs 3 machines. FWIW, we had an extended
period (over months) recently where the power company supply was out of
tolerance (too many volts) for significant periods of time and the machine
ran in bypass mode without a glitch.

You might also have a look at Mark Brown's web site where he has a design
for a battery back up unit design. I haven't built this yet, nor am I an EE,
so can't say how it performs. Web site address and correspondence relating
to it are in the archives. good luck
