RB,

Oh dear. When that happens the first thing I look for is a hardware
problem. It doesn't recover after a few minutes I take it.

Likely things are damn near anything. Motherboard, bad memory,
power supply or CPU chip. Could be a heat problem but I doubt it.
Some say it could be a hard drive but I have only seen hard drives
either die or freeze the computer each time you turn it on.

If you have two RAM chips you can pull one then run for a while to see
if it is the problem. If it still does it then swap them. Check the
CPU and see if the fan is working ok. You can pop it off and clean
the fan and get some paste at Radio Shack to put back on to pull the
heat from the small area they touch. If it comes to testing you need
a lot of expensive equipment or software so or just the ability to
feel what is wrong. Last choice has always worked for me but it helps
to have a few spare parts to swap out to check it out.

Now it could be software. TS2ki will freeze a machine for a few
seconds, but it only happened to me when I was running lots of stuff
and DTN sat. and it was using all the processing power to compute
something behind the scenes. Can you bring up the task manager when it
happens? What about your OS, is it in good shape? What program do
you use for email? Unfortunately the list goes on forever.

Try a google search for XP Home freezes. This will give you a zillion
things to check. Sorry I couldn't be more help. A fast fix is the
computer shop.

Best regards,
  Jimmy Snowden
