I find XP to be very efficient and stable
Here's what I would do:
Install Partition Magic and allocate a partition of your hard-drive for XP
(or better yet, add a 2nd hard-drive)
Set up the dual-boot option so you can choose to boot to either Win-2000 or XP
Install XP from scratch, **NOT AS AN UPGRADE** to Win-2000
After XP is installed, apply at least the first three tweaks at:
http://www.monroeworld.com/pchelp/xptweaks.php
(the tweaks will make XP much faster and more efficient)
Install your normal software under XP
With this scenario, you'll have everything you had under 2000 running as
before with XP to play with in the event that it needs some work to
duplicate whatever you were doing under 2000
