Get yourselves a dedicated firewall hardware appliance with a virtual private network (VPN) and put
your computers behind it.
I don't understand why there isn't enough people armed with this type of
basic configuration. Perhaps Blaster will be THE wake-up call.
If you had this configuration, you would have been protected by
Blaster, which attempts to probe the vulnerable
windows listening ports 135, 445, and others. My firewall blocked
them all, and they were coming in as often as often as once every 5 minutes one
day.
You just can't do anything less anymore. The Hackers have taken full
advantage of Microsoft's long-term security lag trend. Microsoft has
had a lingering blind spot with anything and everything associated
with the Internet --including internet security. I would not rely on
Microsoft's own firewall add-ins, at least for a while. I would rely
on 3rd party firms specializing on firewalls to protect your box, as
well as Windows and its many vulnerabilities.
