Jim,

I just went through this struggle and set up a LAN so I could copy files from one
computer to the other.  I haven't set it up for internet sharing(I use a dial
connection, probably too little bandwidth) but I have it figured  out for sharing
files.

Here's a great web site with step by step instructions:

There were a couple of things I couldn't figure out until I followed these
instructions.  There are also other similiar web sites but so far this one was the one
that worked for me.
