Assuming that you havent been using a dedicated virus scanner I would suggest that you:

1. install and run an antivirus software - avg has a free download at http://www.grisoft.com. It could be a virus infection other than klez. AVG can be set to automatically look for updates and integrates with outlook express. You could also try one of the free online virus scans eg http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

2. If you don't already download and install both Spybot S&D and AdAware

Spybot http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Spyware can certainly do quirky things to your OS

3. If you want to further beef up your security run a trojan detector eg ANTS (free)
 http://www.pt.lu/comnet/desc/ants.html

4. If you are looking for an alternative to Outlook Express consider Pegasus (free) or The Bat (pay). Both are highly recommended by
their users (I use Pegasus). Both have a learning curve which is steeper than OE but it is well worth the effort. Just take it a little at a
time. Pegasus has very powerful filters and is more secure than OE (but then what isn't).
