Richard:
Software is often a complex issue. The 'best' for one person may
indeed be junk for someone else, yet some measures of quality do
exist.
I've visited a few independent virus testing / alert sites and
found that grisoft passed some tests. That is all. Not best,
worst, just a pass.
For a comparison reports visit:

and see how a variety of products rated by multiple testing labs.
One other note:
GriSoft is located in the Czech Republic.
Without prejudice, but drawing upon historic record, the Czech
government and the Czech industry is largely controlled by the
Russian Mafia and German corporations. (BTW, under German tax
law, bribes are a tax deductible business expense is paid OUTSIDE
of Germany. :-) The Czechs have a long list of scams over the
past decade involving fraud, corruption, and technology crimes.
Prague is a favorite place for the Russian Mafia to set up shop.
They run legitimate seeming software business claiming legit
revenue flows and give away 'free' software with trojan horses.
Why? Fictitious sales revenue --mostly drug, prostitution and
racketeering money-- is legitimated by declaring it as 'corporate
revenue'. The 'corporate revenue' is tax FREE due to special
long term tax incentives. So, the bottom line: whores go in,
trojan horses and cash flow out of Prague.
Now, of course, I may be a skeptical fellow, but, prior to taking
free Czech software, my preference is to pay the $30 to $50 out
of pocket to one of the vendors listed by PC Magazine.

p.s. The same caveats do not apply to Poland or Hungary. Poland
is traditionally Russian unfriendly. Hungary is not a Slavic
country. Hungarians are extremely HOSTILE to both Russians and
Germans; if there is a way to stick it to the Russians, or
Germans the Hungarians will figure out how.
