Normally future contracts have gaps when you switch from one to the other.
Adjusted data is "adjusted" so that the gaps don't appear (either forward or
backwards). A backwards adjusted continuous contract at least show the
correct price for recent data.
In some cases this can lead to problems (some adjusted future contracts
actually show prices below zero).
