Don't know too much about "the tiny software company," but I believe they're
a few steps up from ZoneAlarm. Here's a response I got from their support
after posing an answer that I received from ZoneAlarm. "Kind of" self
explanatory.
Hi Colin,
All of our software should work with the NTS software provided you set the
NTS software to protocol driver. This only matters if the NTS software has a
protocol driver option.

Subject: do you experience a ZoneAlarm Pro issue for nts
I received the following email from ZoneAlarm Pro, which is self
explanatory. Does your software "bump into" the same or similar issues? I'd
appreciate knowing before I download and try. I'm an ISP and I'm looking for
products of this genre to refer to clients.
Thank you for using ZoneAlarm.
Difficulties that some users experience using the two seem to be related to
the order in which services start, combined with some peculiarities of IIS.
Contributing factors include the speed of the machine, how many other
services are trying to start up at the same time, how fast the services
respond when they start up, etc. Symptoms include either IIS or vsmon not
starting.
There are two issues in particular that must be addressed in order to
resolve problems running IIS with ZA:
(a) services that start before ZA, and
(b) the IIS executable and how it
interacts with ZA.
IIS is one executable, inetinfo.exe, but that executable includes two
Windows services. The primary part is the "IIS Admin Service" service and
the server part is "World Wide Web Publishing Service" service. Both
services need to be running for IIS to work properly. Inetinfo.exe's
description is "Internet Information Services" and that is what shows up in
the ZA Programs list. "Internet Information Services" needs to be allowed
to connect to the appropriate zones AND allowed to act as a server. If this
is set correctly, usually things start properly without additional
intervention.
There is more to the story. When inetinfo.exe starts, it first starts the
service "IIS Admin Service." Depending on the exact timing (i.e., if
inetinfo.exe starts after vsmon but before the ZA user interface),
Inetinfo.exe gets in the Programs list as "Internet Information Services"
with question marks and no server permission. This is because vsmon is
running and is able to identify the executable, but ZA is not running, so
vsmon can't check what the permissions are, and uses the default. When
"World Wide Web Publishing Service" starts, it needs server permissions or
it will not start. But since its executable is also "Internet Information
Services", it is already on the list-it is not added again, and server
permissions may be off by default. Once inetinfo.exe is set to allow for
both local and internet zones, and server is allowed for both zones, both
IIS services should start properly on a reboot. Again, depending on the
exact timing, both IIS services may start before ZA, or one or both may
start before vsmon, which is the TrueVector engine. In those cases, IIS may
still not function properly after a reboot with the correct permissions
specified in ZA..
However if things do not start properly, one somewhat simple but effective
way to solve this is to set "World Wide Web Publishing Service" Startup type
to Manual instead of Automatic, and use a batch file in the Startup group to
start it manually.
