troubles with paintbars... please help!

i know that i am missing something obvious with paintbars.  

i have a paintbar that correctly paints the H-L "body" of a regular OHLC
bar, but i would also like to paint the O and C ticks.  i have tried to do
this various ways with the result that i get black lines thru the correctly
painted bodies of my bars.  i need to turn the paintbar off and on bar by
bar.

could someone please post code that demonstrates correctly painting all four
prices of a bar chart when the conditions are met and turning it off when
the conditions aren't met?

is it me or is this an unnecessarily confusing aspect of EL?
