A couple thoughts for the second question come to mind:

it could be trying to access miserybank.com

it could be attempting to verify the password via the internet.

it could be a mode of copy protection.  it should notify you but then this
could jepordize the password protection and give a point of entry to
hackers.  ideally they should throw up a dialog but it's not mandatory.
it's extra programming to do that, albeit relatively easy but when you're
pressed for time the way omega has been for the last year with this product,
it gets second billing.  only the most honest companies would do it.
somehow omega doesn't quite fall into that category.
