..........ofcourse not from me :-)) - but I received the following mails privately and I
got permission to post them as I allways want to see both sides - hope it helps
someone here without a cray:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been trading with it full time for about two months,
My systems run much more accurately in 2000i in fact I was
quite shocked when I built my principal system in 2000i it actually worked
quite differently, seems the include system and the 64k limit made it
impossible for the various signals to communicate, in ver4. My back
testing results are much more realistic, and the system runs in real time
like the back testing results say it should.
RadarScreens are very useful and can display indicator values at various
compression and dynamically sort and Rank based on any indicator applied
to the RadarScreen.
I have noticed that most of the problems people are having are actually
system related, and a lack of patience. The GlobalServer needs to run for
a while before you start doing any thing else, once you hook it up to a
data feed. The manual recommends overnight esp if you add a collection
template. The server is very busy building a symbol base from the feed
this occupies your HD and CPU for a while when starting the server. The
server is also saving each bid and ask tick as well as last sale that is
about 3x the data ver 4 handled.
I can honestly say that I have never crashed the server or lost a tick of
data.
I have found that there are several things that you can do to windows to
improve performance and stability, of 2000i I can outline them later if
you'd like, I am getting ready for the open and will be glad to answer any
questions I can privately. I am very pleased with 2000i and would not give
it up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I will also send you the
things that I have done to my Win 9x machines to get them to run as well
as I do. On the Office 2000 issue, Msft. warns beta testers to only run on
non critical machines, any beta software can trash your OS among other
things. 2000i is all COM and ActiveX controls so it will run much
differently. Once the server is up and running charts draw quickly and the
heavier the quote load the faster they draw, if you want all the ability
to link to Excel and Access you have to have ODBC capabilities, the Msft
Access drivers are standard windows drivers, that have apparently been
redone for Office 2000, and are not backward compatible yet, a standard
beta situation.
Actually on down days I have found that due to the volatility increase
that it's better to take my trades as short calls, rather than long puts,
the delta seems to get much better on the short side. The other odd thing
is that on a day that goes down slowly both calls and puts go underwater.
The calls much more rapidly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am running 2000i quite well and find that many problems are due to
system configuration, I make the following changes to all my machines, I
am running three all day 2000i is residing on an IBM with a 266 Pentinum
Pro and 192 Mb or RAM. As traders we ask more of a PC than most users, and
they are not configured for handling Raw data, streams. All my data
handling programs run much better after making the following changes.
I thought I would pass them on for what their worth.
I use Norton Utilities to maintain my systems but there are also a few
rules to follow there also, I will pass those along as well if requested.
The following applies to Win95 and 98. I also pass along the warning that
system changes should be undertaken with caution, and a reboot should be
performed after each change as well , also create back ups to system files
before changes are made. These work for me and I believe solve many of my
operating problems, I make these changes before running any Windows
Machine.
I Run sysedit: Under C:\config.sys I set FILES=90 and BUFFERS=50
Set a minimum virtual memory size, any time windows has to resize the swap
file I find it may hang, I use a minimum of 138 MB and a maximum 300 MB.
Using Norton Utilities to optimize my registry and swap files places the
minimum of 138 MB on the outside edge of the HD. This keeps the seek heads
from having to scan the whole HD looking for fragmented swap files. I then
use Norton Speed disk to defrag and set the options to place files
modified daily first, This places all my data files next to the swap
files, and my program files on the inside of the HD. I take power
management away from windows. I Disable all AntiVirus programs. I also
disable Fast Find if the machine has MS Office and remove every thing from
the start up folder. I set all my machines as network servers under file
system. I disable system agent if it is enabled. I disable all screen
savers, wall paper changers, and any desk top effects programs. I use
Norton WinDoctor to keep invalid Registry entries out of my registry, as
most uninstll routines do not remove all the registry entries left over. I
have had these be the root of some problems. I empty C:\Windows\temp
frequently, and always before my Friday night defrag.
I don't know if this will help anyone but I have few Operating system
problems.
