Re: 40bonn.dat file of 200meg too big?

What file system type are you using? If it is FAT (w95,3.x,dos) I would not
compress your drive. FAT stores data in segments called sectors. If one
sector goes bad it is not a big deal. Data is moved to a new sector
(usually) and your computer knows not to use the bad sector. The only
problem is if the sector size is 16kb and you have a 1kb file you lose a
little space. FAT compression :) as far as I know makes your whole hdd one
sector by taking out all the space lost in each sector. Then files are
crossed linked and if you lose one crosslink your whole hdd is wiped. I
have played around with this a lot. As a trader, it is much easier and
cheaper to buy a new hdd and keep going.

If the file system you are using is NTFS (WinNT), that is another story.
With NTFS you can add a new HDD and make NT see it as part of your original
drive. Also compression with NTFS is much safer. NTFS has many more
security checks then FAT. Do not get me wrong, NTFS also can have problems.

Hope this helps
