The HTML pay level surprised me also. HTML is a trivial script language
that can be learned in a few hours. Most "programmers" don't even consider
it to be "programming" in the usual sense.
The reason obviously is only due to the explosive growth of the web.
Businesses all over the world want web sites, so there is lots of demand
HTML script. I wouldn't want to bank on knowledge of HTML for long-term
employment, but right now there is lots of demand for people who can create
web sites.
On aspect of programmer compensation many may not have considered is the
importance of combined knowledge of more than one field.
How much chance is there someone who knows nothing about accounting would be
able to write good accounting software?
How much chance is there someone who knows nothing about medicine would be
able to write good medical software?
How much chance is there someone who knows nothing about trading would be
able to write good trading software?
Knowing how to program is not very valuable unless someone knows how to use
that knowledge to solve problems in other fields. Programmers who have a
solid understanding of some other field are the ones who can command high
rates for their work. A beginning programmer right of out school who has
little knowledge of any other field may have to work for $30 per hour, while
an experienced programmer with specialized knowledge of some other field
will be able to get more work than they can handle at $150 per hour.
