I don't have any inside info on Win-98. Perhaps a beta tester could better
answer your question.
What I can say is that Microsoft has always sacrificed a lot of potential
performance advancements by including backward compatibility into each new
version of DOS and Windows. OS-2 was an example of a better performance OS
that IBM released, but it didn't include backward compatibility for DOS
programs and thus died a slow death.
There are many programs in daily use that rely on DOS routines and I can't
imagine that MS would suddenly abandon their past development practices and
cast millions of users adrift. From what I've read, there are no major
surprises in Win-98.
