This is not good enough where a virus on your PC is concerned.

Many virus programmers will write his virus to take over an existing
Microsoft system file that is rarely if ever used. Microsoft includes
a free utility to scan your PC which will verify every system file to
be authentic. If an invalid system file is found, it will ask you to
install your system CD and the "Fake" file will be replaced.

Under Windows 98 and Win98-SE this free utility is called:
    SFC.EXE
Go to Start + Run and enter SFC.EXE
This utility is easy to run. If you do an internet upgrade to your
system, then run SFC again to update its identifiers.

Newer versions of Windows "should" have a similar routine to scan
system files. Let us know what newer versions of Windows uses.
