Lionel-
Have you tried rebuilding or validating your files?  If you haven't,
back them up first, then File > File Operations > Validate.  It
supposedly recalculates each of your accounts from the first entry forward and
logs errors that might show up.  Where investing accounts are concerned, I
don't know if it checks each of the equities or mutual funds against the EOD
value, but if it does you would be well to update the historical values for what
investments you have before doing the file validation.  And speaking of
updating, Intuit offers patches/fixes/upgrades through their web site
(Quicken.Com I believe), but it is accessible through Quicken itself.  It
would likely be best, if you haven't done these things, to take them in the
reverse order of the way I have presented them.  The ultimate, upgrade to
Quicken 2003, but you'll have to make sure you've done the other things before
installing it anyway.
Good luck.
P.S.  Oh yes, do you reconcile each of your accounts when the bank or
brokerage statement is received?
Ron

  The problem is not
  that simple. If the problem was due to an error in an entry, it would be
  constant from that point to the end of the file and it would be easy to find.
  The errors in the Quicken check registry varies from the first
  balance entry through to the end balance entry. In some places it can be a few
  hundred dollars, in other places it can be several thousand
  dollars.

  I may have used
  the wrong word, by stable I meant keeping the balances constant unless I make
  a change in an entry.

  I used to swear by
  Quicken, now I am swearing at it.

  Quicken tech

  Re: [Metastockusers] alternative to Quicken
  I have used Quicken 2002 DeLuxe since it was first available and I have
  not had any of the problems you have listed.  However, being certain to
  follow the rules (documentation) helps immensely and having the discipline to
  stay current with entries makes it easier.
  I recently upgraded to the Quicken 2003 Premier, and it too has performed
  quite well.  The biggest problem I have had with each of the Quicken
  releases (going back several versions) has been changes to graphic
  interface.  Old and comfortable patterns of activity and finding things,
  generating reports, etc. get changed and it takes a while to relearn the
  processes.
  Accuracy has been a problem only when the guy entering the data has
  screwed up in some way.  Or perhaps going back in time to change or edit
  an entry or entries will change results at the end of a sequential
  process.
  Stability - never had a problem with that.

    Quicken 2002 has
    caused me more headaches and lost time than all other software that I
    use.
    <SPAN
    class=561503820-17102002>
    It is unstable,
    entries do not maintain their values. It operates like the Microsoft program
    that is/was used by the Dept of Energy that the Russians brought to our
    attention.  Apparently they continued to use pen and paper accounting
    until they were certain that the Microsoft program was validated. Earlier
    entries were changed without any indication of it, all our records that are
    used to audit fissile material are invalid and we may never be able to
    straighten out the records.
    <SPAN
    class=561503820-17102002>
    I am having a
    similar experience with Quicken.
    <SPAN
    class=561503820-17102002>
    Can anyone
    recommend an alternative to Quicken and Microsoft Money that meets the
    following requirements:
    <SPAN
    class=561503820-17102002>
    1. sturdy and
    reliable, does not change entries or balances.
    <SPAN
    class=561503820-17102002>
    2. easy to use
    interface
    <SPAN
    class=561503820-17102002>
    3. Can read and
    transfer Quicken files.
    <SPAN
    class=561503820-17102002>
    4. Preferred if
    it can read Turbo Tax files.
    <SPAN
    class=561503820-17102002>
    This sounds like
    a difficult set of requirements.  After all we've only
    been writing commercial software for over 4
    decades.
