Hi Guy,
You cannot go short in an IRA. These are treasury regulations (e.g.
IRS). However, and I've not done this, but you could check into it,
you can BUY short mutual funds, effectively increasing in value when
the market goes down. There is a bear fund and an ultra beard fund,
which is leveraged by about 1.5 - 1.8, thy claim 2x but it really is
not so.
The IRS allows that, in that you are BUYING into a fund. It just so
happens that it goes up in value as the market goes down, and vice
versa.
