Barry,

There are two main alterations to the system as it was printed
in TASC. The first is the use of a momentum indicator in conjunction with
the crossover of a fear level. Walter suggested using the Directional
Movement Index (DI), and I have incorporated that into the system. For
some equities, the DI does not seem to be particularly relevant; however, I
require a minimal value of 5 in conjunction with the crossover. The
highest DI level used is on EMC Corp. at 12 so I would suggest that you can
probably get away with using 5 to 15 for your optimization. The use of the
DI, even at minimal levels, seems to help cut down on whipsaws, so I never enter
on a crossover of a fear level unless that crossover is confirmed by the
DI.

The other change I can actually take credit for, and it was
confirmed by Walter Downs. I noticed when testing the system on Mindspring
that time periods longer that 12 improved the performance of the system.
Walter wrote me that the use of 12 time periods as published in TASC was a
mistake, and he'd tried to inform the editors of TASC of this but the change
never made it to the article. So when I test a system, I optimize (there's
that word again), the time periods between 10 and 50 days. I've found that
most of the really strong performers have relatively long optimal time
periods. I think it is because these issues tend to make really big moves
when they take off, and the longer time periods put enough lag into the system
to enable you to take advantage of that without being taken out of a move
prematurely based on intra-rally corrections. At the same time, I've
watched some holdings move up 30% or so over the course of a month only to
reverse and give back most, all or more of the gains before triggering the
sell. I've tried several methods to initiate quicker trade exits, but all
have been detrimental to the system results. If you can find a better
method to exit these trades, I'm all eyes so please let me know.

A word about optimization. I'm aware of the arguements
against optimizing systems and the dangers of curve fitting. However, I
feel that in this system it is fair to optmize the time periods for the
individual equity. The reason is that all equities, much like people have
their own individual personalities and quirks. This system is based solely
on the price action of the stock and does not involve things like volume, or
overbought/sold, or bands or other fancy indicators. Its really an
amazingly simple system when you dig into it. For this reason, I do not
believe that I've over optimized the system. If I'm wrong, you guys will
be the second to know.

You just click the button organize in the expert dialogwindow and follow the instructions. Then you can export and import
what ever you want.
Best regards.
