Most List-servers here in Holland do this. The only disadvantage of it is that:

a.- emailing takes up a few minutes longer
b.- there is no guarantee given that emails send or received from server
     are also 100% virus-free

The #b also applies to all AV-programs that are on the market.
By downloading the latest update file, you are indeed updated, but only to the
at that time (of file build date) known and officialy recoqnised virusses
(that can come in many variations).
Any virusses (or variations of) that are created and passed on after the
file build date, or the on build date not offficialy recoqnised ones, ofcourse
can(are) not ever (to) be included in the last update file, and as such everyone
is still vulnerable to send or receive any (newbies).

Just keep sending of attachments down to pictures, ascii-text etc. and on receival,
save attachement to disk, right click the saved attachement and click Quickview,
then straight out delete any mails with unknown, obsolete, obscure or other
doubtfull attachements.

The Happy99.exe warning message posted on the List some months ago, did
ring a bell when receiving Stefan's mail. However, it would not have ever passed
my own AV-system, eg not to mess with any of the unknown file types
(executables or macro-ed) and to apply the Quickview workaround described
above (in my situation using the Quick View Plus-program).
