Pleased to hear that you have been able to fix your traverse
folders problem. However,

your friend the techie did not mention anything new under the sun, eg anything that

was not already (mis-) recorded in the
Downloader's Manual, the Dowloader's online
Help

or discussed here on the
List.

POINT A

As for point A, the answer the techie gave you, is probably a
standard help-desk answer

(eg just make sure that you have the
latest DL-version installed) and do note that
here

your Downloader's version-build date, in
this also does NOT matter. I have been
traversing

ever since the midst of 1997, eg using the old 6.0-version (build somewhere in 1996).

POINT B

As for point B, you techie is quite right. Many
List-mails that I have answered before on

this subject(converting ASCI), included
the mentioning of placing the RIGHT headers

on top of each column in the
file (and also to split the columns with using the
separating

comma's, eg not the semi-colons
commom in CSV-files) and also put right on the top
of

the asci-file, eg on the first line/1st record.

Note that if you look in your Downloader-manual p.70-72 many
examples were provided

for you, and also mentioning the capitol D for the
periodicity-column.

In the examples given, also most of the given Column's headers are incorrect (eg
in

names, spelling and arrangements, see below). Therefore when I was distributing my Index

file to its subscribers, I pressed the users to use the
standard ASCII file layout only, a

layout-describtion that also differs strongly from that of
what is mentioned in the above

DL-manal pages (70-72).

WINDOWS (IN-) COMPATABLE

Also, as a standard procedure, whenever you are not 100% sure
that you are dealing

with an also 100% pure Windows-compatible program, or not 100% sure that just any

program is for 100% designed to run
in the Windows-environment (eg the Win95-OS),

than keep all folder and filenames reduced to 8 characters
only AND use the capitol

alphabet-letters only (UPPER CASE). Same applies for vital file contents (eg in batchfiles,

in datafiles etc. etc.).

From this then, note that the Downloader is also NOT 100%
Windows compatible, eg

not a program written to be used under
Windows Operating Systems(OS), actualy it was

written for DOS and is only an upgraded
DOS-version, of which most actions are still run

in the (virtual machine) DOS-environment(VDOS70), and only activated from within
Win95.

Unless you are quite familiar with the DOS shortcomings that classifies it not to be

a fully compatible Windows program, then re-read your
old DOS-books.

The Downloader is still a DOS-program, and as such has got the
DOS-shortcomings

also. For Windows-users, that is much like a virus (or a
bugged program).

FILE HEADERS

The CORRECT file headers, their CORRECT standard arrangement
and their CORRECT

spelling (and CORRECT additional info) should read (for
standard ASCII-files):

<TICKER>,<PER>,<DTYYMMDD>,<OPEN>,<HIGH>,<LOW>,<CLOSE>,<VOL>,<OPENINT>

Note without a separating comma at the end.

Also note to always delete the last blank empty line(s) that
are left behind in an ASCII text-file

(eg when using NotePad/WordPad/Word/Excel).

This header, but now for use in an Excel-file, reads the same
(eg when using multiple tickers)

or the first 2 columns
(ticker+per) should be dismissed (when using a single
ticker).
Also each comma singly should then be placed in its own column
(field) and here too, like

in an ASCII-file, is of a separating
nature.

From the above, you can see that both the Downloader Manual
and the online Help as well

as the Downloader program itself need a good and proper overhaul made to them (to get rid

of the general usage's bugs, eg not the latest Patch's, as for
installing that Patch non excist,

eg the latest MetaStock that will upgrade to v6.52 is
bug-free).

>
> After over a year the downloader
problem with
> traversing data subfolders to do the conversion
>
("update") was finally solved by a very smart tech
> called Lynn at
Equis.
> For the Traverse destination subfolders to work
>
right, you need two things:
> A) the latest (2/99) build of
dlwin.exe
> b) the source ASCII .txt file must be in exactly
the
> right form, preferably with a header for the fields.
> For the
period field I had "d" for daily.
> Changing it to "D" made
Downloader happy. But note
> that any other small discrepancy from what
Downloader
> expects in the source ASCII .txt file could easily
>
cause failure.
>

My is enabled. I double checked your screen image with mine and they were
identical. I'm waiting to hear from Symantec to figure out why it didn't
work correctly.

Thanks

Guy

Guy,

I think NAV's Auto-Protect feature has to be enabled. I have been leaving
it enabled and don't see much performance degradation even though my
machine is relatively slow.

Best,
