<BODY bgColor=#ffffff>
<DIV><FONT size=2>Pleased to hear that you have been able to fix your traverse
folders </FONT><FONT size=2>problem. However,</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>your friend the techie did not mention anything </FONT><FONT
size=2>new under the sun, eg anything that</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>was not already (mis-) </FONT><FONT size=2>recorded in the
Downloader's Manual, the </FONT><FONT size=2>Dowloader's online
Help</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>or discussed here on </FONT><FONT size=2>the
List.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>POINT A</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>As for point A, the answer the techie gave you, is probably a
</FONT><FONT size=2>standard help-desk answer</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>(eg just </FONT><FONT size=2>make sure that you have the
latest DL-version </FONT><FONT size=2>installed) and do note that
here</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>your Downloader's </FONT><FONT size=2>version-build date, in
this also </FONT><FONT size=2>does NOT matter. I have been
traversing</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>ever since the </FONT><FONT size=2>midst of 1997, </FONT><FONT
size=2>eg using the old 6.0-version (build somewhere in 1996).</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>POINT B</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>As for point B, you techie is quite right. Many
List-mails that I have </FONT><FONT size=2>answered before on</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>this </FONT><FONT size=2>subject(converting ASCI), included
the </FONT><FONT size=2>mentioning of placing the RIGHT headers</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>on top </FONT><FONT size=2>of each column in the
file (and also to split the columns with using the
separating</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>comma's, eg </FONT><FONT size=2>not the semi-colons
</FONT><FONT size=2>commom in CSV-files) and also put right on the top
of</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>the asci-file, eg on the first line/1st record.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>Note that if you look in your Downloader-manual p.70-72 many
</FONT><FONT size=2>examples were provided</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>for you, and also mentioning the capitol D for the
</FONT><FONT size=2>periodicity-column.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>In the examples given, also most of the </FONT><FONT
size=2>given Column's headers </FONT><FONT size=2>are incorrect (eg
in</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>names, spelling and arrangements, </FONT><FONT
size=2>see below). Therefore when I was distributing my Index</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>file to its subscribers, I pressed the users to use the
standard ASCII file layout only, a</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>layout-describtion that also differs strongly from that of
what is mentioned in the above</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>DL-manal pages (70-72).</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>WINDOWS (IN-) COMPATABLE</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>Also, as a standard procedure, whenever you are not 100% sure
</FONT><FONT size=2>that you are dealing</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>with an also 100% pure Windows-compatible </FONT><FONT
size=2>program, or not 100% sure that just any</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>program is for 100% </FONT><FONT size=2>designed to run
in the Windows-environment (eg the Win95-OS),</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>than keep all folder and filenames reduced to 8 characters
only </FONT><FONT size=2>AND use the capitol</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>alphabet-letters only (UPPER CASE). Same applies </FONT><FONT
size=2>for vital file contents (eg in batchfiles,</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>in datafiles etc. etc.).</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>From this then, note that the Downloader is also NOT 100%
Windows compatible, eg</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>not a </FONT><FONT size=2>program written to be used under
Windows Operating Systems(OS), actualy it was</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>written for DOS and </FONT><FONT size=2>is only an upgraded
DOS-version, of which most actions are still run</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>in the (virtual machine) </FONT><FONT
size=2>DOS-environment(VDOS70), and only activated from within
Win95.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>Unless you are quite </FONT><FONT size=2>familiar </FONT><FONT
size=2>with the DOS shortcomings that classifies it not to be</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>a fully compatible Windows program, then re-read your
</FONT><FONT size=2>old DOS-books.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>The Downloader is still a DOS-program, and as such has got the
DOS-shortcomings</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>also. For Windows-users, that is much like a virus (or a
bugged program).</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>FILE HEADERS </FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>The CORRECT file headers, their CORRECT standard arrangement
and their CORRECT</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>spelling (and CORRECT additional info) should read (for
</FONT><FONT size=2>standard ASCII-files):</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT
size=2><TICKER>,<PER>,<DTYYMMDD>,<OPEN>,<HIGH>,<LOW>,<CLOSE>,<VOL>,<OPENINT></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>Note without a separating comma at the end.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>Also note to always delete the last blank empty line(s) that
are left behind </FONT><FONT size=2>in an ASCII text-file</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>(eg when using NotePad/WordPad/Word/Excel).</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>This header, but now for use in an Excel-file, reads the same
(eg when using multiple tickers)</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>or </FONT><FONT size=2>the first </FONT><FONT size=2>2 columns
</FONT><FONT size=2>(ticker+per) should be dismissed (when using a single
ticker).<BR>Also each comma singly should then be placed in its own column
(field) and here too, like</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>in an ASCII-file, is of a </FONT><FONT size=2>separating
nature.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>From the above, you can see that both the Downloader Manual
and the online Help as well</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>as the Downloader program itself need </FONT><FONT
size=2>a good and proper overhaul made to them (to get rid</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>of the general usage's bugs, eg not the latest Patch's, as for
installing that Patch non excist,</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>eg the latest MetaStock that will upgrade to v6.52 is
bug-free).</FONT></DIV>

My is enabled. I double checked your screen image with mine and they were
identical. I'm waiting to hear from Symantec to figure out why it didn't
work correctly.
Thanks
Guy

Guy,
I think NAV's Auto-Protect feature has to be enabled. I have been leaving
it enabled and don't see much performance degradation even though my
machine is relatively slow.
Best,
Barry
