What I think is needed from a data source:

* Ability to download all US stocks and mutual funds each night in one
effort, not to exceed 4 minutes.
* Capability to provide nearly instantaneous  conversion to Metastock format
without doubling the disk space required.
* Auto update of splits, name changes, exchange changes, bad data
* Group/sector data, IRL, S&P, DOW, Amex, etc.
* Custom Scan capability faster than MSWIN for technical and fundamentals
indicators.
* A quick and easy charting module for quick looks at stocks.
* A company that listens to customer and fixes bugs and continually adds
more features at no additional costs.
* Costs are held down below a dollar a day.
* Historical data at least for 5 years.
* Capability for internet and 1-800 downloads.
* no requirement to use Downloader and Equis file management.
