Harley,
By being a rice broker (Italy is the first grower of rice in Europe and the biggest
mills are here) I totally agree with your postings.
The big players do manipulate the market. Be it grain elevators or rice mills it is
always the same story... And they do it on both sides: thay bid low on the rough rice
market, forcing farmers to sell near their breakeven, and they ask low from their
clients pushig less ccoompetitivie middle sized mills out of the market.
Furthermore big players usually win (just wonder why?) procurement contracts, have
better credit rating and therefore pay lower interest on their business loans, easily
obtain public financing of export... Therefore they can even sell milled rice at a small
loss because they finance their business from other sources. Well, at lest that's what
I've seen myself.
Sustain my business: enjoy a tasty Italian risotto!
